About Eurail
Since 1959, Eurail has enabled millions of journeys that connect people, cultures and generations across Europe. As the company behind the Eurail and Interrail passes, Eurail enables cross-border train travel in 33 European countries, inviting travellers to slow down and experience Europe more deeply. As an impact-driven company, Eurail promotes responsible, low-emissions travel while empowering meaningful connections, cultural understanding and personal transformation along the way.
The client's challenge
Eurail was developing its 2026–2030 corporate strategy and had the ambition to integrate ESG directly into that strategy. It sought support from 2impact to identify the most material ESG topics linked to its business model and to integrate these strategic priorities into a future-proof corporate strategy.
Our approach
Double materiality assessment
The double materiality assessment process followed our four-step methodology. First, we mapped the organisational context by analysing Eurail’s business model, key stakeholders, organisational structure, value chain, and trends in the European railway sector. We then engaged with stakeholders to identify a list of impacts, risks, and opportunities. These were assessed by internal experts using predefined scoring criteria to determine the materiality of each ESG topic. The results were subsequently validated and approved by senior management, resulting in the identification the material topics for Eurail.
Embed ESG Strategy into Corporate Strategy
To integrate ESG into Eurail’s corporate strategy, we conducted two workshops that formed the core of the project. In the first workshop, internal topic experts and the leadership team reviewed existing activities for each topic and defined ambition levels. In the second workshop, ESG considerations were integrated into Eurail’s strategic priorities, reinforcing the link between ESG and the business strategy. Based on the outcomes of both workshops, we provided recommendations on the qualitative ambitions and how these can be effectively implemented through the corporate strategy.
The result
We helped identify the material ESG topics for Eurail across environmental, social, and governance areas. These topics were then consolidated into strategic priorities and integrated into Eurail’s existing corporate strategy, with clearly defined ambitions. The outcome enables Eurail to focus its efforts, establish robust measurement frameworks, and strengthen its role in enabling responsible, meaningful rail travel across Europe.
As a company rooted in connection and responsible rail travel, it was essential for us to embed ESG at the heart of our strategy. Partnering with 2impact brought structure and clarity to the challenge. Together, we integrated ESG into our existing strategic priorities, reinforcing the strong link between our business strategy and our ESG ambitions. This work strengthens our ability to enable more responsible, meaningful travel across Europe and deliver long-term value for travellers, partners and society.
