Responsible procurement

Responsible procurement means integrating sustainability and human rights considerations into purchasing decisions and supplier relationships. By embedding environmental, social, and human rights objectives into procurement practices, companies can reduce risks, strengthen supplier collaboration, and ensure that commercial decisions support broader sustainability goals.

This approach goes beyond compliance, promoting responsible buyer behaviour and long-term value creation across the supply chain. It is particularly relevant for companies in sectors with procurement-related risks, those seeking stronger supplier relationships, or those responding to buyer or investor expectations on responsible sourcing, including through the Dutch ISV requirements.

Our approach

We help companies embed responsible procurement principles into their purchasing practices and supplier relationships.

Our six-step methodology:

1. Strategic review: Analysing current procurement practices to identify key gaps and opportunities for improvement.

2. Risk assessment: Identifying product groups, suppliers, and environmental and social risks. Prioritising risks based on impact and likelihood.

3. Procurement policy and strategy: Developing clear policies and strategies as needed. This includes defining roles, goals and indicators to measure progress.

4. Procurement criteria: Translating policy frameworks and risk assessments into concrete supplier selection and award criteria.

5. Integrate responsible purchasing practices: Developing responsible contracts and two-way codes of conduct, including expectations for buyer behaviour. This can include the training of buyers on responsible purchasing practices.

6. Continuous supplier engagement and improvement: Developing plans for supplier follow-up, support, and capacity building to encourage ongoing improvement.
