About Groningen Seaports

With modern port infrastructure and a focus on sustainable energy and environmentally friendly processes, Groningen Seaports helps businesses grow and innovate while contributing to a greener economy.
The client’s challenge
Groningen Seaports aims to achieve CO₂-neutral operations within its management area, fully aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement. To reach this goal, insight into current CO₂ emissions was needed, along with support in defining concrete steps to achieve this ambition.
Our approach
We started the process by mapping CO₂ emissions per business segment (Technology, Facilities, Marketing & IT, Shipping, and Industry), including scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, and by setting reduction targets for 2030 and the long term (2040–2050). During the first workshop, these insights were discussed and aligned with the relevant teams, while also identifying strategic pathways required to achieve the goals. The second workshop focused on translating these pathways into concrete actions, including prioritization and alignment with Groningen Seaports’ existing processes. At the same time, a foundation was laid for internal governance to ensure that progress is structurally monitored.
The result
The climate transition plans provide Groningen Seaports with a clear roadmap to a CO₂-neutral cluster within the port area and for operations per segment. The plan maps emissions and reduction targets, translates strategies into concrete action plans, and ensures implementation, monitoring, and evaluation are embedded in the organization’s ESG agenda and ESG report. We are proud that the strategic choices and actions deliver measurable CO₂ reduction impacts both in the short and long term.
Impact
As a result of this process, Groningen Seaports now has practical and widely supported climate transition plans that provide not only insights into emissions and reduction targets but also a concrete pathway to Net Zero, with internal governance and annual progress evaluation.
Thanks to our collaboration with 2impact and the dedication of our teams, we have been able to link daily operations and practical execution to our long-term strategy. This allows us to make tangible progress every day toward our Net Zero goals.
