DMA and GHG Baseline Assessment – Rederij Groen
Rederij Groen is a shipping company based in the port of Scheveningen (NL) deploying its fleet for services such as offshore guard and seismic support operations.
In preparation of developing an ESG strategy and publishing their first sustainability report, Rederij Groen wanted to conduct a double materiality assessment (DMA) and a greenhouse gas (GHG) baseline assessment to identify the most relevant ESG topics. 2Impact guided Rederij Groen, making use of the software from Salacia Solutions in executing both the DMA and the GHG baseline assessment.
Initially, Rederij Groen prepared for CSRD reporting for 2025. However, the changes proposed as part of the Omnibus Directive exempted them from CSRD. Despite this, they decided to complete the project, valuing the DMA and GHG assessment as the basis for their sustainability strategy.
For Rederij Groen, the project resulted in:
-A solid foundation for their ESG strategy by focusing on the topics truly relevant to them.
-Insight into emissions across the value chain, enabling targeted action on COâ‚‚ hotspots.
-Engagement with key stakeholders, strengthening relationships and increasing support.
-A robust starting point for their first sustainability report, demonstrating transparency and commitment to external audiences.
Our approach
DMA
The project was conducted using our in-house four-step methodology.
In the first step, we mapped the organisational context of Rederij Groen. This included the business model, key stakeholders, organisational structure, value chain, and relevant trends and developments in the maritime sector. This provided the necessary background to conduct a double materiality assessment.
In the second step, we compiled a long list of ESG topics to determine relevance and identify impacts, risks, and opportunities. This long list was then discussed and validated with internal stakeholders.
In the third step, the same internal experts were asked to assess the identified impacts, risks, and opportunities using pre-defined scoring criteria. These scores determined the materiality of each ESG topic.
In the final step, senior management validated and approved the outcomes of the assessment phase. This approach resulted in the key material topics for Rederij Groen.
GHG
We then continued with a GHG assessment to calculate Rederij Groen’s GHG emissions. The baseline assessment began with an introduction to the GHG Protocol. Rederij Groen’s operational and organisational boundaries were then defined, followed by an inventory of their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission categories. In the next step, relevant data was collected per category and linked to corresponding emission factors. All data came together in the Salacia data hub, ensuring a clear overview of Rederij Groen’s emissions in their respective categories.
Results
The DMA identified seven material topics, with 20 material impacts and 10 material risks and opportunities. Rederij Groen now has a clear focus on the ESG topics that matter most to them. With the DMA as a solid foundation, the next step is to develop a full ESG strategy and sustainability report.
The GHG baseline assessment mapped Rederij Groen’s total emissions and identified the parts of the value chain where emissions are the highest. With these insights, Rederij Groen is now equipped to take targeted action to reduce emissions in the identified hotspots and engage with partners in the value chain that have a significant influence on emission reduction.
Throughout the DMA and GHG assessment, we worked with our partner Salacia Solutions, which offers ESG software tooling. All data is stored in Salacia’s ESG data hub, ensuring that all insights are easily available in one place. The tooling also allowed us to complete the DMA and perform the detailed climate calculations in a structured and replicable way.

“As Rederij Groen, we are very pleased with the expertise, knowledge and dedication of 2Impact. Their specialised understanding of ESG, the DMA process, and the relevant regulations really took the pressure off our team. Mapping our GHG emissions is not something we are used to doing ourselves. Thanks to the support and sparring with 2Impact’s enthusiastic team, we were able to focus more clearly on executing our business strategy, in which ESG now plays a central role.”
