Royal Ahrend maps Scope 3 emissions and sets Science Based Targets
2Impact

Together with 2Impact, Royal Ahrend developed a comprehensive Scope 3 calculation as the foundation for its climate strategy. Through targeted workshops, a practical methodology based on the number of furniture items sold, and strong internal buy-in, Royal Ahrend created the basis to validate its Science Based Targets and achieve its sustainability ambitions. The results were fully integrated into Salacia's ESG-Software.

About Royal Ahrend

Royal Ahrend is a leading European manufacturer of workplace solutions, headquartered in the Netherlands. Since 1896, the company has been developing and producing sustainable office furnishings for multinationals, educational institutions, and government organizations worldwide. Circularity and sustainability are deeply embedded in the company’s strategy: as early as the 1990s, Royal Ahrend began working according to circular design principles and the Cradle-to-Cradle philosophy.

The client's challenge

In line with its own strategy, Royal Ahrend decided in 2023 to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). To do so successfully, the company first needed full insight into its Scope 3 emissions, often the largest and most complex category. Royal Ahrend sought support in choosing the right methodology and platform for calculating Scope 3 value chain emissions, engaging internal departments, and establishing a solid foundation for future reporting.

Our approach

Working closely with Royal Ahrend and using the Salacia platform, 2Impact mapped the most material Scope 3 categories across the value chain: purchased goods and services, upstream transport, and end-of-life treatment. For each category, internal stakeholders from finance, procurement, IT, and logistics were engaged through targeted workshops. Instead of relying solely on spend-based data, Royal Ahrend, advised by 2Impact, chose an outflow-based approach using units sold, weight, and material volumes, supported by existing Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of Ahrend’s product portfolio. This method captured emissions across the entire value chain, going beyond direct suppliers.

All assumptions, datasets, and methodological choices were carefully documented, ensuring the approach remains transparent and reproducible in the future. From the start, the requirements of SBTi were considered so that Royal Ahrend could report correctly, formulate reduction targets, and have it's baseline, methodology, and targets validated by the initiative.

The result

In June 2023, Royal Ahrend officially signed the SBTi commitment. In 2025, the company received formal approval of its CO₂ reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative, becoming the first office furniture manufacturer in the Netherlands to achieve this. A complete Scope 3 baseline was established, including detailed analyses of the most significant emission sources. Based on this, clear targets were set, including:

  • • Net zero emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) by 2050 at the latest
  • • 100% renewable electricity by 2030
  • • An absolute reduction of 85% in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 compared to the 2018 baseline
  • • A reduction of 42% in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 compared to the 2023 baseline

In addition, Royal Ahrend is developing a supplier engagement plan to further improve data quality and involve partners across the value chain in CO₂ reduction.
