Setting science-based climate targets - Dura Vermeer
Introduction
Dura Vermeer, founded in 1855, is one of the biggest construction companies in The Netherlands. They are active in residential construction, commercial construction, infrastructure, and technology. Dura Vermeer has already been measuring corporate GHG emissions for several years and has set ambitious net zero targets. They decided to get their targets assessed and validated by SBTi, to enhance credibility of its targets. 2impact was asked to support Dura Vermeer in this process.
What we did
As a part of the project, we first consolidated all relevant SBTi resources and requirements for setting near-term and net-zero targets in one overview. We then reviewed Dura Vermeer’s GHG inventory and baseline methodology for completeness and accuracy towards submission. We filled in few (small) gaps to ensure that we receive limited number of questions from SBTi on the GHG inventory.
We organised several sessions with internal stakeholders to clarify the SBTi requirements and to discuss the implications of targets. Then we prepared the official submission forms. During the target validation process, we supported Dura Vermeer in responding to SBTi questions both on GHG inventory and on sector-specific insights.
Results
Successfully setting up the SBTi approved targets provided Dura Vermeer with external validation of their climate ambitions, offering a clear, science-based pathway toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By aligning their internal targets with the latest climate science, the company gained credibility with investors, customers, and other stakeholders who increasingly expect climate leadership. One key outcome was the addition of a renewable electricity target, which was integrated into the company’s strategy and publicly communicated.
While Dura Vermeer already had a net-zero target, the SBTi project helped clarify and communicate these goals internally and externally. This journey encouraged deeper reflection and greater integration of sustainability within the organization's overall strategy. The process not only refined their internal systems but also improved their positioning as leaders in sustainability. This project was an important milestone towards achieving their long-term climate goals.
2Impact’s advice
For organizations considering SBTi targets, we recommend starting with a robust GHG inventory that aligns with SBTi requirements. It’s crucial to review your emissions data and exclusions thoroughly, ensuring clarity around estimations and emission factors. Doing this in parallel with the SBTi process will help ensure a smoother experience, as we did with Dura Vermeer. A clear and transparent methodology is key to successfully navigating the target-setting process.
