What is EcoVadis?
EcoVadis is a globally recognized assessment platform that evaluates companies' sustainability performance based on four themes:
- Environment
- Labor & Human Rights
- Ethics
- Sustainable Procurement
EcoVadis uses an evidence-based methodology and analyzes companies according to international standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and ISO standards.
EcoVadis is a voluntary assessment. It is also common for companies to be invited to participate by business partners or suppliers. By participating in EcoVadis, companies can:
- Gain insights into their environmental, social, and ethical practices, also in comparison with peers within and outside their sector;
- Meet the expectations of customers and partners, as more and more stakeholders demand transparency on sustainability efforts;
- Identify sustainability risks in their own operations and value chain.
Why should companies conduct an EcoVadis assessment?
The EcoVadis assessment process is not just a checklist; it can offer valuable insights into your organization’s ESG management approach and serve as a tool to monitor progress.
- Benchmark performance: Understand how your sustainability efforts compare to those of industry peers.
- Track progress: Monitor improvements and set concrete goals based on your EcoVadis assessment.
- Navigate regulation: Understand relevant sustainability standards and regulations for your sector in preparation for the EcoVadis journey.
How does EcoVadis assess your organization?
The EcoVadis assessment is a paid service that evaluates an organization’s sustainability management system based on comprehensive documentation provided by participating companies.
The questionnaires are tailored to your organization’s size, sector, and location, ensuring that the assessment is relevant to your specific business activities. This way, EcoVadis focuses the assessment on topics that are material to your sector and company.
The evaluation combines both internal and external inputs and sources. Companies complete a detailed questionnaire and provide supporting documents, such as quantitative data on KPIs and corporate policies. EcoVadis’ 360° Watch uses AI to scan public sources such as news articles and legal records for external information.
Sustainability performance is assessed across four pillars:
- Environment
- Labor & Human Rights
- Ethics
- Sustainable Procurement
Each theme is scored from 0 to 100. The overall score is calculated based on these theme scores.
This total score is then compared to the scores of all companies assessed in the previous year to determine your percentile ranking. If you score in the 65th percentile or higher, you may receive a medal — bronze, silver, gold, or the highest distinction: platinum. With a minimum score of 45, you can earn a badge. Read more here about the different medals and badges.
EcoVadis aligns its assessment criteria with widely recognized frameworks such as GRI, ISO, and the OECD Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct.
It is worth noting that EcoVadis’ methodology and assessment criteria are regularly updated to reflect the latest developments in sustainability.
How to read an EcoVadis scorecard
Six to eight weeks after submission, you will receive your detailed results on the scorecard page in the EcoVadis portal. On the scorecard dashboard, you will find:
- Medal: Based on the percentile of your total score
- Percentile: A ranking of your total score compared to other companies that reported in the past year (not limited to your sector)
Total score and scores per theme (0–100) - Theme percentiles: Compared with companies in the same sector
- Strengths and improvement areas: A qualitative description of the strengths of your policies, actions, and results for each of the four themes (Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, Sustainable Procurement)
Tip: The improvement areas are especially useful for targeting specific gaps and strengthening your internal sustainability management system. For example, if recommendations include “No information on reporting total weight of recovered waste” or “Unclear documentation on career development and training policies,” you’ll know exactly what’s missing and where to improve. Each recommendation also comes with a priority level (high, medium, low), helping companies prioritize policy updates.
