More information about EcoVadis

What is EcoVadis?

EcoVadis is a globally recognised assessment platform that evaluates companies’ sustainability performance based on four themes:

  • Environment
  • Labour & human rights
  • Ethics
  • Sustainable procurement

EcoVadis uses an evidence-based methodology and analyses companies according to international standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and ISO standards.

EcoVadis is a voluntary assessment. It is also common that companies are invited by business partners and suppliers to participate. By participating in EcoVadis, companies can:

  • gain insights into their environmental, social and ethical practices, also in comparison to peer within and outside the relevant sector, and;
  • meet customer and partnership expectations as more and more stakeholders require organisations to be transparent about their efforts, and;
  • identify sustainability risks in their operations and value chain.

Why should companies conduct an EcoVadis assessment?

The EcoVadis assessment process is not just a box-ticking exercise; it can provide valuable insights into your company's ESG management approach and be used as a tool to track progress.

  • Benchmark performance: Gain insights into how your sustainability efforts compare to industry peers.
  • Track progress: Monitor improvements and set actionable goals based on your EcoVadis assessment.
  • Navigate regulations: Understand relevant sustainability standards and regulations for your industry while preparing for your EcoVadis assessment

How does EcoVadis score your organisation?

The EcoVadis Assessment is a paid service that rates an organisation's sustainability management system based on extensive documentation provided by participating companies.

EcoVadis questionnaires are customised based on your company’s size, industry, and location, ensuring relevance to your specific operations. This way EcoVadis makes sure that your assessment is focused on topics considered material to your sector and organisation.

The assessment is done using a combination of internal and external input and sources. Companies fill out a detailed questionnaire and provide supporting documents such as quantitative data on KPI’s and company policies. EcoVadis 360° Watch uses AI to scan public sources like news and court rulings for external information.

Sustainability performance is then evaluated across four pillars:

  • Environment
  • Labour and human rights
  • Ethics
  • Sustainable Procurement

EcoVadis assigns a score from 0 to 100 for each theme. The overall score is calculated from these individual theme scores.

This overall score is then compared against all companies' scores from the past year to determine your percentile ranking. If you score in the 65+ percentile and above you will be awarded a medal, ranging from bronze through silver, gold and the highest one platinum. If you have a minimum score of 45 you can be awarded a badge. Read more here about the different medals and badges.

EcoVadis links to other sustainability standards by aligning its assessment criteria with widely recognised frameworks, such as GRI, ISO, and the OECD Guidelines for responsible business conduct.

It is good to keep in mind that the EcoVadis methodology and scoring criteria are updated regularly to reflect the latest developments in sustainability.

How do you read an EcoVadis scorecard?

Six to eight weeks after submission, you will get your in-depth results on the scorecard page on the  EcoVadis portal. On the scorecard dashboard, you see information including:

  • Medal: based on the percentile of your overall score
  • Percentile: a percentile ranking of your overall score in comparison to other companies who reported in the past year (not limited to the same industry)
  • Overall score and score for each theme (0-100)
  • Percentiles of the scores in comparison to companies in the same industry
  • Strengths and improvement areas: a qualitative description on the strengths of your policies, actions, results for each of the four themes (Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement).

Tip: the improvements areas are especially useful for companies to work on improving their score on specific aspects and strengthen their internal sustainability management system. For example, if you receive recommendations such as: “No information related to reporting on total weight of waste recovered”, or “Inconclusive documentation for policies on career management and training” on your policies, you know exactly what is missing and what to work on. Each recommendation is also labelled with a priority level (high, medium, low). This also helps companies to prioritise policy updates.
